Is My Brown Lawn Dead? Why Your Grass Goes Dormant During Hot Weather

After weeks of hot sunshine and very little rain, many lawns across Suffolk, North Essex and Norfolk have started to turn brown. While this can be alarming, the good news is that in most cases, your lawn isn't dead it's simply protecting itself.

Grass has a natural survival mechanism called dormancy. During long periods of heat and drought, the grass slows its growth and turns brown to conserve energy and moisture. Think of it as your lawn going into "sleep mode" until better growing conditions return.

Although it may look dry and lifeless, the roots beneath the surface are often still alive. Once cooler temperatures arrive and rainfall returns, a healthy lawn will usually begin to green up again within a few weeks.

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is assuming the lawn is dead and trying to fix it too quickly. Overwatering, cutting the grass too short or applying the wrong products during extreme heat can actually put the lawn under even more stres

Instead, it's important to raise your mower height, avoid excessive foot traffic and water deeply only when necessary. If you do water, it's far better to give the lawn a thorough soak once or twice a week than to water little and often. This encourages deeper root growth and improves drought tolerance.

Lawns that are already on a regular treatment programme are generally much better equipped to cope with dry weather. Seasonal feeding, aeration and soil conditioning help develop stronger root systems, improve soil structure and increase the lawn's ability to retain moisture. As a result, professionally maintained lawns often recover much faster once rainfall returns.
