Pets are a big part of the family, but they can take a toll on your lawn. From worn patches caused by running and playing to yellow spots from pet urine, lawn damage is a common issue for pet owners across the UK. The good news is that with the right approach, your lawn can recover and thrive again.
One of the most noticeable problems is yellow or brown patches caused by dog urine. These occur because of the high nitrogen content, which can “burn” the grass. To help prevent this, try to water the area immediately after your pet urinates, as this dilutes the nitrogen and reduces damage.

For existing patches, start by removing dead grass and loosening the soil underneath. This prepares the area for repair and helps new grass establish properly. Adding a layer of fresh topsoil can also improve the growing conditions.
Next, apply grass seed suited to UK lawns and lightly rake it into the soil. Keep the area consistently moist while the new grass establishes, but avoid overwatering. Within a few weeks, you should start to see fresh growth filling in the damaged spots.
Heavy foot traffic from pets can also lead to compacted soil and worn paths. In these areas, aeration is key. By creating small holes in the soil, you improve drainage and allow grass roots to grow deeper and stronger. Overseeding these areas will help restore thickness and prevent further wear.
Training can also play a role in protecting your lawn. Encouraging pets to use a specific area of the garden can limit widespread damage and make maintenance easier.
With regular care and a few simple changes, it’s possible to maintain a healthy lawn while still giving your pets space to enjoy the garden.
